US President Joe Biden has made an unannounced visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, to pledge continuing support and offer $500m worth of weaponry to the country, ahead of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of the country on 24 February 2022. There have been no reports of missile or air strikes during Biden’s visit. The US president told his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that the West is united against Russia, and praised the Ukrainian people for their resistance to the invasion. Biden’s visit came a day before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s address, which was expected to be targeted at a rupture in relations with the West.
